Overview
"An Exhibition of Net Art: Past, Present, and Future"
- Sofia García
Details
ARTXCODE, in partnership with Rhizome, presents WEBSITES WEBSITES WEBSITES! (WWW!), a group exhibition celebrating the website as an artistic medium in honor of Rhizome’s 30th anniversary. Curated by Vienna Kim and Benoit Palop of LAN Party and Sofia Garcia of ARTXCODE, WWW! honors the website as an enduring site of experimentation, identity, and autonomy from the playful interventions of 1990s net.art pioneers to the poetic web experiments of artists navigating today’s algorithmically saturated internet.
Presented as live websites installed physically across the gallery and online here at websiteswebsiteswebsites.net, this exhibition bridges generations of artists to show how the website remains a radical artistic space: one that belongs to no platform and answers to no algorithm.
Works will be available for direct acquisition throughout the run of the exhibition, in-person or online via Fellowship.

Theme
The internet became part of everyday life, and short domain names started selling like land in Manhattan. This project sells the opposite: domain names made of meaningless 63-character strings, the maximum length you can register, sold under the title Last Acres of the Internet. On each of these domains grows an HTML wilderness, generated from random strings. Whoever buys one owns the name and the wilderness that comes with it, and can build whatever they want there. The internet has been developed down to its last corner. This is a tribute to the net.art pioneers who once treated it like open land, and an escape to its farthest edge.
