Biography

My pictures must first be beautiful, but that beauty is not enough. I strive to convey an underlying edge of anxiety, of isolation, of fear.

Gregory Crewdson is an artist based in New York by Western Massachusetts. He holds degrees from SUNY Purchase and the Yale University School of Art, where he currently directs the graduate studies program in photography. With a career spanning over three decades, Crewdson has garnered widespread acclaim for a series of bodies of work, including Natural Wonder (1992–97) and Cathedral of the Pines (2013–14). His series Beneath the Roses (2003–08), an intricate project that spanned nearly a decade and involved a crew of over one hundred people, was featured in the 2012 documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters by Ben Shapiro.
Crewdson's photographs have become a notable presence in the American visual lexicon, comparable to the paintings of Edward Hopper and the cinematic works of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch. Often collaborating with a large team, Crewdson meticulously plans each image, paying close attention to details such as light, color, and production design to create dreamlike scenes filled with mystery and suspense. While many of his images are set in small towns, Crewdson deliberately avoids identifiable signifiers, constructing a timeless world beyond the constraints of a specific era.
