David Maisel is a versatile artist, proficient in the mediums of photography, video, and painting. Renowned for his multi-chaptered aerial photographic project, Maisel delves into the creation of abstracted images that capture dramatically altered human environments, such as open-pit mines, clear-cut forests, water reclamation zones, and the militarized landscapes of the American West.
Recipient of a prestigious 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship, Maisel's artistic journey also includes notable accolades like a 2008 Artist Residency from the Headlands Center for the Arts and a 2007 Scholar Residency from the Getty Research Institute. He has garnered support from institutions like the National Endowment for the Arts and the Center for Cultural Innovation.
Maisel's compelling body of work has been the focus of seven monographs, including notable titles like "Proving Ground" (Radius, 2020), "Mount St Helens: Afterlife" (Ivorypress, 2018), "Black Maps: American Landscape and the Apocalyptic Sublime" (Steidl, 2013), and "Library of Dust" (Chronicle, 2008), among others.
